Los Altos 8, Bonita 1

Los Altos JV Baseball rebounded from a tough 2-0 loss against South Hills to defeat the Bonita Bearcats by a score of 8-1, improving to a 3-1 record overall and 1-0 league record.

Sophomore Kevin Jenkins (2-0) went a solid four innings before giving way to sophomore Christian Small who went three innings to record the long save.

The score was a bit misleading because the game was tied at 1-1 in the 5th inning before the Conqueror squad erupted for seven runs in the top half of the inning. In the first four innings, the Conquerors left a total of 8 men on base but made sure to get on the board in the 5th inning. Key hits from sophomore Anthony Roell, junior Raymond Lulet, Anthony Carillo, Randy Rodriguez and David Richardson contributed to the offensive outburst. Richardson picked up the "Game Ball" with three hits on the day.

Small kept the game interesting by walking the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th inning before getting out of the jam with a classic 4-6-3 double play, compliments of Joe Lopez, Sunny Cornejo and Adam Ayala.

Lopez also collected his first hit on the year with a smash to right field despite Small's claim that Lopez would not get on base.

The Conqueror squad faces its hometown rival, Wilson, at home on Tuesday, March 20th @ 3:15 PM.

Sophomore Anthony Camarillo (0-1) takes the hill in hopes of his first victory of the year after suffering a hard-luck lost against South Hills on Thursday.

Aceves to the Rescue

Los Altos remained undefeated with an 8-6 victory over South Hills in its first home game on Tuesday. Christian Small picked up a “vulture” victory and Mario “Rivera” Carillo notched his first save, stranding the tying run at first base.

Carillo showed some pop with the bat in the first inning as he hammered the first pitch of the game into the left field corner. Carillo’s double set the tone offensively for Los Altos as they continued their first inning magic by giving starting pitcher Kevin Jenkins a three run lead. Junior shortstop Raymond Lulet continued his tear at the plate with an RBI-double in the 3rd inning to raise his league-leading slugging percentage to 1.534 with his two HRs and two doubles on the year.

Jenkins pitched a solid 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Small in the 5th inning. Some shoddy infield bunt defense led to 4 unearned runs for South Hills. One bright spot of the inning was a 1-3-5 double play turned on the third attempted bunt of the inning.

But enter pinch-hitter Tony Aceves. With one out and runners on first and third, Aceves came in to hit for David Zaragoza “aka” Battle of Saratoga. With South Hills concerned that a possible squeeze was in the works, Aceves took a full hack and whacked a two-run double in the right-centerfield gap to score two runs, giving the Los Altos squad a two-run lead it would not relinquish.

Small pitched a quick 1-2-3 sixth inning and gave way to closer Carillo who nervously slammed the door.

Los Altos JV Baseball remains undefeated at a 2-0 clip. They face South Hills on their turf tomorrow @ 3:15 PM (Thursday, March 13, 2008) in West Covina.

Los Altos 16, Northview 3

Talk about a good start to a season. The Los Altos JV Conqueror squad exploded for 13 runs in the 1st inning, knocking out Northview’s starting pitcher after only 1/3 of an inning. Junior SS Raymond Lulet led the charge with two 2-run homeruns in the opening frame to lead the charge. Lulet joins the annals of a very select group of individuals who have gone yard twice in one inning. A total of seventeen batters paraded to the plate before the Conquerors even saw the field. Lulet also contributed a double in the top of the 7th inning to cap a very good start to the season as the Conquerors won by a convincing 16-3 margin.

Sophomore Anthony Camarillo also found his stroke at the plate, going 3 for 3. He also contributed a 1-2-3 scoreless inning in the 6th inning. Junior Mario “Rivera” Carillo came in and slammed the door in the 7th with another 1-2-3 inning as the Camarillo-Carillo combo may prove to be the deadliest bullpen duo since Guillermo Mota and Eric Gagne in 2003.

Sophomore Kevin Jenkins went a solid three innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) while striking out three. Sophomore Christian Small provided some valuable middle relief as he shut down Northview, striking out four batters in his two innings of work.

Monday's Scrimmage Wrap-up

In today's intrasquad game, center fielder Ernie Ortega collided with left-fielder Tony Aceves. Ortega suffered a contusion on his temple and is listed as day to day. He's hoping to avoid a stint on the 15-day disabled list.

Aceves had a fine day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead Team 1 to a 9-5 victory. He hit a solo HR off of Junior Joey Mercado in the 6th inning and then proceeded to hit another 2-run triple off of him in the 7th inning.

Mercado had a statistically rare 0-0 at the plate with 4 BBs and a HBP. He scored 3 runs, but only two for Team 1 since he was traded for Junior Mario Carrillo in the middle of the game.

Carrillo pitched two innings as he seeks to reclaim his role the "ace" pitcher of the JV baseball staff, a moniker he held in the 2007 season. Carrillo also played a solid second base and recorded an assist as he gunned down sophomore Kevin Jenkins trying to tag from 3B on a shallow fly ball to right field.

Jenkins had a stellar day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a BB and a HBP. He also contributed 3 scoreless innings as he makes the case for being the "Go To Guy" in the 2008 Los Altos JV rotation.

Other notable plays today included Adam Ayala making a diving catch near near the visiting team's dugout and proceeding to make a double play out of it.
